How to decide on a logo

What a good logo needs

Deciding on a logo is tricky. A logo is one of the most essential elements of your brand. It needs to be appealing, memorable and speaks volumes about your business. It needs to support the brand, its name, and the purpose, all the while communicating to the target audience. It can be so hard to know what to choose. It can also be hard to be objective and choose what is best for your business. But how do you know what is the right logo for your brand?

Here are five key principles to consider when deciding on your logo:

1.     Simple

Simplicity and clarity are so important when choosing the right logo and brand identity for your brand. A logo needs to be easily read and recognisable. Can the audience read your brand name without the slightest struggle?

2.     Distinctive

There should be something cleaver or unique about your logo and identity that can make your brand stand out of the crowd and be memorable. Does your logo have an element of something unexpected or specifically customised for your brand so it is interesting, rememberable or recognisable?

3.     Versatile

A versatile identity is functional and can easily adapt for different media and contexts without compromising its legibility or recognition. It is important to remember that your logo and brand identity will be applied onto a range of different elements. Therefore, all of your logo and supplementary logo-marks need to look consistent and a part of the same identity.

4.     Appropriate

It is vital that the logo is appropriate for the brand and business it represents. For example, do the colours and typography suit the brand’s personality? Does the logo represent, reflect and position your brand in your target market?

5.     Timeless

Strong logos stand the test of time. You need to consider how long you want your brand to be around and whether this logo will still look the part. Try and not be too swayed by trends and consider the longevity of the logo.

Deciding on a logo is an important decision and these five principles of good logo design can help you feel more confident you are making a good decision to position your brand.
